Jean le Normand (1638 – 1706) and Anne le Laboureur (abt. 1630 – 1700)

The Normand descendants in North America come from three different branches. The first, oldest and most numerous branch is that founded by Jean le Normand and Anne le Laboureur. Jean le Normand was born in 1638 at Igé, Bellême, Perche, Normandie, France. He was the first of that family in Canada and came from Perche, the French province which provided so many of the early immigrants to New-France. He was the son of Gervais le Normand and Léonarde Jouault (sometimes referred to as Leonore Janet) who had married in Igé on 6 March 1636. Gervais also came to Québec where he died on 23 April 1666.

St. Martin Church of Igé, France, ancestral church of the Normand family

In the 1600s a Seignior, i.e., a landed noble, had recruited families good morals and of high work ethics from Igé to go to Canada to work on their plantation. Two plaques hang on the wall above the baptism font in the Igé church. One names several pioneers to Canada, including Jean LeNormand. The other was left by the Normand family association of Québec and names Jean Normand as having come from Igé.

The book Nos Origines en France, des Débuts à 1825, Volume 7, “Normandie et Perche  lists the people from Igé (and other areas), apparently taken from Jetté's book.  The people from Igé in Québec include:
Jacques BEAUVAIS dit St. Jemme, born 1623 Igé, died 1691 Montréal
Marie BELHOMME
Catherine (daughter) and Sebastien (father) DODIER
Pierre and Roberte GADOIS
Pierre, Louis (father) and Louise (daughter) GAGNE
Francois, Francoise, Nicolas, and Mathurine GOODE, children of Nicolas GOODE and Francoise GADOISE
Eloi JARRY dit Lahaye
Jean LEDUC
Simon LEREAU
Gervais and Jean NORMAND
Julien and Pierre TROTTIER

Jean le Normand arrived in New-France in 1647 and married Anne le Laboureur on 18 July 1656 at the Notre-Dame parish in Québec City. Anne le Laboureur was the daughter of Thomas le Laboureur and Marguerite Bardin, from Caen, Normandie, France. The couple settled in the Seigneurie Notre-Dame-des-Anges, on a land concession on the Canardière in the Limoilou area of Québec City. Twelve children were born out of this union, of whom three boys and four girls assured the survival of their line. Their eighth child was Suzanne Normand (1666-1738) and she is our link through her marriage in February 1686 to Jacques Huppé (1661-1731).

The Normands from this branch are spread throughout Québec, in the other Canadian provinces, in several New England states and in the southern USA, particularly Louisiana and Texas. For example, a grandson, Jean Pierre Normand (born 1744), migrated first to the German Coast of Louisiana and then on to the Avoyelles Prairie about the 1790s. His brother, Daniel Normand dit Gaspard, dropped the Normand part of his name and began the Gaspard family of Avoyelles Parish. For more details, Germaine Normand relates the history of the first century of this branch in North America in her book, Fonder foyer en Nouvelle-France, Les Normand du Perche. Les Éditions du Trille. Ste-Foy, Québec: Éditions Multimonde, 1999, 324 pages, ISBN 2-921146-90-8.
