Marriage Contract of Catherine Paulo (Fille de Roi) and Étienne Campeau

The first Filles du roi (daughters of the King) arrived in New France on September 22, 1663. Among the 17 girls of the king arrived to Ville-Marie, six will be married at the end of November that same year. These arriving first are accommodated by Sister Marguerite Bourgeoys, and remain with the nun in the small house bought on the grounds of Saint-Ange. This was rather modest with only one cattle shed (converted to a sewing room). We can find the marriage contracts of certain Filles du roi who remained in this house within the public records housed in the Canadian National Archives. These marriage contracts generally report the respective worth and goods of each.

        

Sister Marguerite Bourgeoys and the Filles du Roi

Catherine Paulo arrived at Saint-Ange in 1663. She came to New France from La Rochelle at the age of 19. Catherine was married on November 26, 1663 to Étienne Campeau (Campot). Étienne was 26 years old and had emigrated from Limousin, where he had been a mason. He had arrived in Québec the previous year. Together, they had a total of 15 children. It is possible to find the couple registered in their marriage contract (reproduced below) signed on November 13, 1663 by the notary Bénigne Basset.

They are 7th Great Grandparents to Vernon, Lila, Edward, Valoie, and Colleen's generation.


More Information about Étienne Campeau dit (known as) Limousin (abt. 1635-1692) and Catherine Paulo (abt. 1645-1721)


All the Campeau of America descend from the pioneer Étienne Campeau, born about 1635 at Brive-la-Gaillarde (meaning Brive-the-Strapping woman), of évêché Limoges, in the Limousin, France. He was the son of Léonard Campeau and Francoise Mauger.

Étienne Campeau worked at the trades of mason and taillandier (a skilled craftsman who can make any kind of tool needed by carpenters, cartwrights, and ploughmen--including iron forged axes and hooks). In addition, he also was a militiaman and colonist. His name appears for the first time in 1663 in the registers of New-France, at Ville-Marie. Étienne Campeau probably arrived on this side of the Atlantic about 1659, or at the latest the following year.

Étienne Campeau in the summer of 1663 meets Catherine Polo or Paulo, a Fille du roi ("Daughter of the King") after she disembarks in Québec. They sign a marriage contract on November 13, 1663, in front of the notary Basset and thirteen days later their marriage is celebrated in Montréal.

Catherine Paulo was born about 1645, originating in Notre-Dame-de-Cogne (meaning Our-Lady-of-Knocks), in La Rochelle, France. She is the daughter of Pierre Paulo and Renée Cordetelle.

The couple settle at Pointe-Saint-Charles. In 1664, Étienne Campeau is confirmed and his name is reproduced on two lists of those confirmed, one in May and the other on July 11.

In 1665, Étienne Campeau agrees to take his family and go live with six other colonists and their families on the banks of the Saint-Pierre river, proposed by the sieur of Maisonneuve.

With the census of 1666, he is listed as 28 years old and married to Catherine "Cordelet", the name of his mother-in-law. In 1667, his age is given thirty years; he has two children and six arpents of his property are cleared.

The couple of Étienne Campeau and Catherine Paulo give birth to fifteen children over a period of twenty-four years. The oldest of the girls, Marie Campeau, weaves the bond in this genealogy. Marie is baptized on November 24, 1665, in Montreal and marries three times.

The first marriage, in 1684, was to Nicolas LePileur. Then, the bond which goes down to our family through her children, comes from the marriage held on January 2, 1691, with our ancestor Étienne Desbiens. Étienne Desbiens was born in 1648, originating in Poitiers, in Poitou, France. After Étienne Desbiens dies in 1708, Marie was married a third time--in 1710 to Julien Pérusie.

Our ancestor Étienne Campeau died in September 1692, in Montréal. His widow Catherine Paulo survives him until 1721. At the age of 77 years, she is buried on April 16, 1721, in Montréal.
